Ph.D. in Paleoanthropology from the University of Michigan. She worked in the

with her debut novel, "The Sparrow," published in 1996. The novel,

contact between humans and an alien species on a distant planet. Its sequel,
"Children of God," followed in 1998. Apart from the Sparrow series,
