✚ Telex, the pioneering Belgian synth-pop trio formed in Brussels in 1978 by producer Marc Moulin, vocalist/lyricist Michel Moers, and engineer/sound designer Dan Lacksman, holds a significant, often underappreciated, place in the history of electronic music, intentionally embracing the clean, playful simplicity of synthetic sounds as a direct counterpoint to the seriousness of rock and punk, while injecting a unique sense of European wit and minimalist pop sensibility into the nascent genre. Driven by Lacksman's technical mastery of synthesizers like the Korg MS-20 and the vocoder, the band’s self-declared mission was to "make something very European, without emotion, and to do it brilliantly," a philosophy evidenced by their faithful yet detached electronic cover of the rock standard "Twist Ă  St. Tropez" on their debut album, Looking for St. Tropez. Their most enduring contribution came with the global success of their 1979 single, "Moskow Diskow," a deceptively simple, hypnotic track built around crisp electronic percussion and repeating synth melodies that became a key track in the early electro and disco scene worldwide, helping to popularize the minimalist, machine-driven dance sound that later evolved into techno and house. Telex notably represented Belgium at the 1980 Eurovision Song Contest with the intentionally understated track "Euro-Vision," a bold, satirical move that underscored their artistic commitment to both technology and playful provocation, further cementing their status as electronic music mavericks. They consistently proved that electronic music could be both technically sophisticated and deeply humorous, influencing subsequent generations of synth-pop and minimalist electronic acts, especially in their early use of drum machines and sequencers to create deceptively simple but incredibly catchy rhythms, ensuring their legacy as essential, witty forerunners of modern European electronic dance music.
