✚ Copenhagen, Denmark – Forget soft melodies
and pop rhythms. If electronic music has a dark, brutal, and uncompromising side,
its name is Le脝ther Strip. Behind this name, which evokes the coldness of
leather and the sharpness of a razor, lies one of the most influential pioneers
of the EBM (Electronic Body Music) and industrial music movement. More than
just a band, Le脝ther Strip is the project of a single tortured and visionary
soul: Claus Larsen. The story begins in the mid-80s. In a musical landscape
dominated by new wave and synthpop, Claus Larsen, a young Dane, was drawn to
harder, more industrial sounds. Inspired by electronic music pioneers like
Front 242, Nitzer Ebb, and Skinny Puppy, he founded Le脝ther Strip in 1988. The name is a nod to the fetishistic
aesthetics and dark themes he explores. His first album, "The Pleasure of
the Flesh" (1989), was a shock. Produced with modest means,
it's filled with aggressive bass lines, cold and percussive drum rhythms, and
distorted, menacing vocals. The sound is raw, minimalist, but terribly
effective. Its success, initially underground, was immediate. Le脝ther Strip
found its audience within a community searching for more extreme sounds, far
from the mainstream. The 90s marked the peak of Le脝ther Strip. With albums like
"Science for the Masses" (1990), "Solitary Confinement" (1992),
and "Zardonic" (1993), Claus Larsen refined his formula. His tracks
are true sonic assaults, symphonies of machines where industrial samples mix
with dark synthetic melodies and screaming vocals. Le脝ther Strip was then at
the forefront of the European and American EBM and industrial scene, alongside
bands like Wumpscut and Suicide Commando. Claus Larsen, the sole master on
board, is a true artisan of his sound. He writes, composes, performs, and
produces everything himself, locked in his home studio. This creative solitude,
far from isolating him, gives him total freedom and impeccable artistic
consistency. His music is a reflection of his personal struggles, his
anxieties, his anger, but also his resilience. His lyrics, often introspective, address themes like
loneliness, betrayal, the search for identity, and existential fears. He
contributed to forging a sub-genre of EBM that is harder and darker than its
predecessors. His relentless rhythms and sharp synths have become a trademark
for many bands in the genre. Claus Larsen proved that electronic music, often
perceived as cold and impersonal, could be a vehicle for raw and profound
emotions. He injected his soul into his machines, creating a work that is both
intimate and universal. Le脝ther Strip has greatly influenced the goth and
industrial scene, paving the way for artists like Combichrist, Asphyxia, and
other more recent projects. His "harsh-EBM" style has become a
benchmark for an entire generation. After a hiatus in the early 2000s, Claus
Larsen returned with full force with albums that continue to explore the same
dark themes with more maturity and refined production. Le脝ther Strip has never
stopped evolving, all while staying true to its roots. Today, as musical trends
come and go, Le脝ther Strip remains an unwavering force in the electronic
landscape. Claus Larsen never sought the limelight, preferring to let his music
speak for him. And his music—raw, honest, and hard-hitting—still resonates just
as loudly. It is the iron fist that reminds us that behind the cold chrome of
machines, a heart sometimes beats, a heart that bleeds.
Son premier album, « The Pleasure of the Flesh » (1989), est un choc.
