Rejecting the clean constraints of Motown after his doo-wop group, The Parliaments, evolved, Clinton fused the grit of psychedelic rock with the rhythmic intensity of funk, but crucially infused this sound with advanced electronic instrumentation and a surreal, Afrofuturist aesthetic, exemplified by his stage persona, Dr. Funkenstein, and the iconic Mothership stage prop.
